John A. Dragovits is a member of the Firm’s commercial group where he focuses his practice on tax, real estate, and public finance law. He helps the New Mexico Finance Authority with several loan programs, including the Cannabis Microbusiness Program, the New Markets Tax Credit Program, and the Colonias Infrastructure Fund. He most recently served as a legal extern in the City of Albuquerque’s Consumer Financial Protection Initiative. Prior to that position, John was a legal intern at the Internal Revenue Service in its Taxpayer Advocate Service and New Mexico Legal Aid in its Low Income Taxpayer Clinic. In both roles, he guided taxpayers through their issues with the tax code and provided education on beneficial tax policies such as Earned Income Tax Credits.

John earned a B.S. from the University of Texas and his J.D. from Arizona State University. He is currently working on his Tax LL.M. with the New York University Law Graduate Tax Program with an anticipated graduation date of May 2025. The focus of his studies centers on local and state tax and pass-through entities.

Before John became a lawyer, he was a news producer for KRQE News 13. He hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2012, the Pacific Trail in 2014, and the Continental Divide Trail in 2016.

  • Advises and represents clients on New Mexico tax issues specific to various industries including but not limited to healthcare, government contracting, oil and gas, and manufacturing, with tax planning and structuring, audit defense, administrative protests, refunds, tax credits and tax incentives.

  • Works with clients to structure contractual arrangements in a tax-efficient manner, including advising hospitals, nursing homes, government contractors and other businesses.

  • Advises and assists with negotiating an estimated filing agreement for New Mexico gross receipts and compensation taxes with New Mexico Tax and Revenue Department.

  • Represents clients in formal hearings before the Independent Hearing Office on various tax issues.

  • Works as local counsel on financial transactions involving New Mexico law.

  • Advises and assists clients on issues specific to various utility-scale renewable energy projects.

  • Represents the New Mexico Finance Authority on various matters.
