Derek has represented royalty owners in class action litigation, and he represented the states of New Mexico and Wyoming as a special assistant attorney general to collect underpaid severance taxes and royalties due on oil and gas production. He also represents entities and individuals in a broad range of business disputes. Before beginning his legal career, Derek was an auditor in Arthur Andersen & Co.'s litigation support division. He is also a pilot and has served on the City of Albuquerque's Airport Advisory Board since 2006 and as its Chairman since 2009.
