Areas of Practice Alternative Dispute Resolution "Alternative dispute resolution" (ADR) is a term generally used to refer to informal dispute resolution processes in which the parties meet with a professional third party who helps them resolve their dispute in a way that is less formal and often more consensual than is done in the courts. The most common forms of ADR are mediation and arbitration, but many other forms exist, including judicial settlement conferences, fact-finding, ombudsmen, special masters, and so forth. Though often voluntary, ADR is sometimes mandated by the courts, which require that disputants try mediation before they take their case to court. While all our attorneys have experience in advocacy and conflict resolution, our lawyers who focus their practice in the area of ADR are recognized as experts dedicated to the efficient resolution of disputes. Our lawyers serve as mediators, arbitrators, and special masters in a wide variety of civil litigation matters. Our family lawyers who practice ADR are skilled in the area of collaborative law, which is the ADR alternative to traditional divorce proceedings.
